Preparing a House for Painting: The Step-by-Step Checklist

Painters will tell you the same thing: preparation is 80% of a good paint job. The best paint in the world won't stick to a dirty, flaking surface. Here's what proper preparation involves.

Exterior preparation

• Pressure wash the entire surface to remove dirt, salt and loose paint
• Scrape and sand peeling or chalky areas back to a sound edge
• Repair cracks, nail pops and damaged timber
• Prime bare timber, metal and filled areas
• Mask and protect windows, roofs, plants and paving

Interior preparation

• Wash walls with sugar soap, especially kitchens
• Fill holes and cracks, then sand smooth
• Spot-prime stains and filled patches
• Mask and drop-sheet floors, fittings and furniture
• Remove or cover furniture and wall fixtures

How to get your home ready

• Move furniture away from walls and clear the work area
• Take down pictures, curtains and loose fixtures
• Trim plants away from exterior walls
• Secure pets and let the painter know about access and parking
• Confirm which areas are being painted so there's no confusion
