Common Painting Mistakes and How Professionals Avoid Them
Most paint failures come down to a handful of avoidable mistakes — and they almost always involve cutting corners. Here's what goes wrong, and what a professional does instead.
1. Skipping preparation
Preparation is 80% of a lasting paint job. Washing, filling, sanding and priming give the paint something sound to bond to. Paint over a dirty or flaking surface and it will peel within a year or two, no matter how good the paint is. See our full preparation checklist.
2. Too few coats
One coat rarely gives even coverage, especially on colour changes. Professionals build up two or three thin coats rather than one thick one — thin coats dry evenly and hide brush marks.
3. The wrong finish or product
Using interior paint outside, or a flat finish in a bathroom, is a fast path to failure. The right paint finish and product for each surface matters as much as the colour.
4. Rushing the drying time
Recoating too soon traps solvent and causes cracking, lifting and a patchy sheen. Pros respect the recoat window on the tin — which is why good work can't be rushed through in a day.
5. Poor cutting-in
The line where wall meets ceiling, trim and skirting is where DIY jobs show most. Crisp, straight edges take practice and the right technique — another reason pros earn their fee.
6. Not checking the warranty
A reputable painter stands behind their work, typically 5–7 years on workmanship. If a quote doesn't mention a warranty, ask before you sign.
